一篇好的SAT作文要滿足如下幾個要求：好的內容、好的論點與論據、清晰且恰當的舉例說明、段與段之間又好的邏輯關系、觀點鮮明與清晰及較好的英語寫作掌控力、有變化的句型與詞匯。考生要盡力避免觀點模糊不清、在議論文當中一會說對一會有說錯、語言表達單一、不以理服人、自以為是給人強加自己的觀點、字跡不清及文字太短。我們來看下面的評分標準。
SCORE OF 6
An essay in this category is outstanding, demonstrating clear and consistent mastery, although it may have a few minor errors. A typical essay effectively and insightfully develops a point of view on the issue and demonstrates outstanding critical thinking, using clearly appropriate examples, reasons, and other evidence to support its position is well organized and clearly focused, demonstrating clear coherence and smooth progression of ideas exhibits skillful use of language, using a varied, accurate, and apt vocabulary demonstrates meaningful variety in sentence structure is free of most errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

An essay in this category is effective, demonstrating resonably consistent mastery, although it will have occasional errors or lapses in quality. SAT作文Essay的滿分為12分，考生要在25分鐘內依據試題要求寫出一篇完整的議論文。作文的字數沒有限制，但作文的篇幅約有一張半A4紙的大小。考生要用鉛筆寫作，寫滿作文規定的篇幅，一般要用500至700個英語單詞。每一篇考生的作文由兩個判卷老師打分，每個老師給的分數為1至6分，兩個判卷老師所給的分數之和，即為考生作文的分數。如果兩個老師評出來的分數之差大于一分，還會有第三位老師進行評分。
