元有始之意，旦指天明的時(shí)間，也通指白天。元旦，便是一年開始的第一天。
元旦在古時(shí)候稱為元日，據(jù)說“元旦”最初的稱呼起自三皇五帝之一的顓頊，顓頊以正月為元，初一為旦，而后來的夏、商、周、秦、漢各個(gè)朝代對元旦的規(guī)定各不相同。夏代以正月初一為元旦，商代以十二月初一為元旦，周代以十一月初一為元旦。
元旦一詞，最早出自南朝人蕭子云 《介雅》詩：四氣新元旦，萬壽初今朝。宋代吳自牧 《夢梁錄》卷一正月條目：正月朔日，謂之元旦，俗呼為新年。一歲節(jié)序，此為之首。漢代崔瑗《三子釵銘》中叫元正。晉代庾闡《揚(yáng)都賦》中稱作元辰。北齊時(shí)的一篇《元會(huì)大享歌皇夏辭》中呼為元春。唐德宗李適《元日退朝觀軍仗歸營》詩中謂之元朔。歷來元旦指的是夏歷(農(nóng)歷、陰歷)正月初一。在漢語各地方言中有不同叫法，有叫大年初一的，有叫大天初一的，有叫年初一的，一般又叫正月初一。我國歷代元旦的月日并不一致。夏代在正月初一，商代在十二月初一，周代在十一月初一。
